A life safety system can alert you if a blaze breaks out in your home, but your family’s safety depends on knowing what to do in that situation. CenturyLink® Security, providers of high-quality life safety systems in Monroe, LA, recommend having a plan in place and teaching your children how to respond in an emergency. Below are a few helpful tips to help you get started.

How to talk to your kids about fire safety

1. Make an evacuation plan

An effective evacuation plan should include at least two ways out of every room—usually a door and a window. However, this isn’t always possible, especially if you have a two-story home. Make sure your kids understand the evacuation plan, and where to meet up after making it to safety.

2. Explain what smoke detectors are

fire systemInstalling smoke detectors is one of the most crucial safety measures you can take, but you still have to teach your children what they mean. Explain to your kids what the detectors are for, push the test button to demonstrate the sound, and be sure they associate the noise with danger.

3. Practice opening windows

If your fire system alarm goes off, your children may have to open the window to get out by themselves. Show them how to operate the locks and open the window, and then let them try for themselves. If the windows in your home aren’t used very often, it may be a good idea to give them a refresher every few months.
