Spiders play an important role in Georgia’s ecosystem by serving as both food for larger species and as a natural pest control service. Spiders inevitably find their way into residential homes, but most are harmless. Still, it’s important to recognize their presence so you can contact a pest control professional before they create problems.

What Are the Most Common Spiders in Georgia?

1. Black House Spider

Black house spiders are one of the most common species. While their bite can cause swelling and pain, it’s not life-threatening. They’re found in dry, secluded areas and spin small, messy webs. You’ll find them in gutters, toilets, around window framings, and under eaves. These spiders are roughly half an inch long and have smooth dark brown or black bodies.

2. Brown Recluse

The bite of the brown recluse can cause tissue loss and injury. These spiders can be up to 3/4 of an inch long. They also have a marking on their abdomens in the shape of a violin. They have six eyes instead of eight and prefer dark, dry areas, including closets and garages. They may also nest in shoes and clothing, so check carefully if they’re found in your area. These spiders hunt for their food, so you aren’t likely to find webs.

3. Black Widow

These spiders love to nest in wood and trash piles, under large rocks, and in garages and sheds. They’re small, black, and have a distinct red, hourglass-shape marking on their abdomens. If you discover black widows, stay away; and contact pest control professionals to remove them.

4. Wolf Spider

Wolf spiders can be up to an inch long and hide in burrows on the ground. They’re nocturnal and deliver a painful, though non-lethal bite. They’re aggressive and will bite humans if they feel threatened. Like the brown recluse, the wolf spider doesn’t spin a web.

5. Grass Spider

Grass spiders also called funnel-web spiders, spin a funnel-shaped web on the ground to capture prey. They nest primarily in brush and debris piles, and their bite is rarely dangerous to humans. They are brown or gray and have dark stripes near their head. These spiders are great for capturing pesky insects on your property.
