Whether you want something simple or elaborate, building a DIY fish pond requires the same basic steps. Once you have an idea for your layout, you’ll need to order a liner, bulk sand, and a fountain pump, as well as tools for digging and filling the pond—such as shovels and a water hose. The guide below explains how to proceed after these supplies come in.

5 Steps for Building a Fish Pond

1. Dig a Hole

Once you know the size and shape of the pond you want, dig a hole at least a few inches deeper and wider than your preferences, since this difference will be filled with sand.

Most fish ponds—such as those that support goldfish and water lillies—need only be two feet deep. Make sure you have a pond liner large enough to cover the entire pit.

2. Prep Hole for Liner

Once the hole is ready, add bulk sand to the bottom and sides of your hole to protect your liner from any sharp rocks that you may have exposed. Pack it thoroughly to avoid soft spots under your liner, which could cause shifting or sinking.

Also, if you are installing any plumbing that needs to come up from below, through the liner, place your lines now so you can embed them in the sand underlay.

3. Place & Secure Liner

Stretch out your liner over bulk sandthe hole carefully, avoiding dragging since this could cause it to tear. Once you get it in place, press it into every nook and cranny while keeping the bottom smooth. You can use stones or blocks around the edges to hold it down.

4. Install Any Pumps or Plumbing

If you plan on having a fountain system or circulation pump, install it near the center of the pond. The electrical cord should be able to be submerged underwater and plug into a grounded power source. Fill the pond with some water to test that it is working properly.

5. Fill & Decorate

Once your plumbing is up and running, finish filling the pond with water. If you opted to use cement to secure the stones holding your liner in place, give it 24 hours to cure before filling the pond. Run the plumbing system for two days to flush away any possible chemicals before adding fish.
