An island is a desirable addition to any kitchen since it makes the space easier to use, adds valuable countertop and storage space, and can connect your kitchen to the living area for an open floor layout. If your floor plan has room for an island, then it’s worthwhile to add one in your kitchen remodel. Consider the most important factors to maximize your room’s usage and enjoy a seamless installation.

The Perfect Sizing

Generally, an island should not take up more than 10 percent of the kitchen’s total square footage. Any larger sizes will make it difficult to get around, making your kitchen feel overbearing. If you don’t have space, then you can make the island smaller than 10 percent to accommodate maneuvering space around it.

Begin by mapping out the perimeter countertops and appliances. Your island should have at least 36 inches of walkway space all the way around it for easy maneuverability. If one side of the island will have seating, then there should be at least 44 inches of space for traffic to move behind the barstools.

How You Will Use the Island

hayward kitchen remodelThink about how you would like to use the island. If you’re short on food prep space, then you may want to add a cooktop with ample countertop space around it. If you install a cooktop, you will need to install an exhaust hood that hangs down over the island or downward venting. If you want to use the island to wash dishes, then install a sink with a dishwasher below the counter.

However, if you want the island to be intended as a gathering space for people to sit or stand, then do not plan for food prep on it. Cooking too close to your guests could get uncomfortable or even dangerous if they accidentally touch the hot cooktop.

Keep in mind that adding a sink or cooktop will require laying new utility lines such as water, gas, or electric. The cost of your remodel will rise quickly with every foot of new plumbing you need to lay, so consider whether you have the budget for doing so before you move any of the major appliances and fixtures.
