If your aging parents need more care than you can provide on your own, moving them to an assisted living facility can give them access to all the services they need to live a comfortable and happy life. However, it can still be difficult for new residents to acclimate to an environment outside of the home they’ve known for years. Making a few changes to their space may help with their adjustment.

3 Tips for Helping Your Relative Settle in at an Assisted Living Facility

1. Respect Their Wishes When Downsizing

All of your loved one’s belongings may not fit comfortably in their new residence, so you may need to store or get rid of items. Start with a clear idea of the space available so you and your parent can pick out what furniture or big items are able to fit. Then go through smaller decor and personal effects and have them choose their favorites to hold onto.

If they don’t want to get rid of everything that doesn’t fit, rent a storage unit or keep some items at your home and rotate them periodically. They might also feel better if certain belongings go to family members rather than into storage or the trash.

2. Display Mementos Prominently

Aside from functional furniture, make sure their room is outfitted with their favorite family photos, awards, and memories. Set up a shelving unit or hang items on the walls. You might even set up the decor items similarly to how they were featured in your parent’s home so the new space emulates what they’re used to.

3. Set Up Space for Activities
