Throughout any given day, a person's feet are put through a workout. Feet support the weight of one's body and help to power and propel the legs, and all the while, they're often confined in restrictive shoes. So, it's not uncommon for most people to experience foot pain at one point or another. Below, discover a few foot care tips for relieving sore, achy, or tired feet.

How to Relieve Foot Pain at Home

1. Stretch Your Feet

Stretching loosens tight, tense muscles, which is an excellent way to alleviate foot pain and restore a healthy range of motion. Start with the toes: Flex them upward, then point them straight ahead, then curl them under; hold for a few seconds and repeat the pattern up to 10 times. A gentle calf stretch can relieve painful foot cramping—stand with feet shoulder-width apart, raise the heels and shift your weight onto the toes and balls of the feet, hold for several seconds and repeat up to 20 times.

2. Soak in a Foot Bath

Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate, which, when absorbed by the skin, eases muscle and joint pain, decreases inflammation and swelling, reduces foot odor, and draws infection from the foot and nails. Add five to 15 drops of any essential oil for a more aromatic soak. For optimal foot care, soak up to an hour at least twice a week.

3. Invest in Arch Supports

Arch supports, or orthotics, stabilize and cushion the feet when standing or walking. They can eliminate the foot pain that comes with wearing certain types of shoes. They also help with balance and ensure the pressure is evenly distributed throughout the foot. You can order custom orthotics from a foot care specialist and make sore feet a thing of the past.

While these solutions can bring short-term relief, you should see a podiatrist if you experience foot pain regularly. Choice Podiatry Associates has locations in the Monfort Heights South, Kenwood, and Wyoming areas of Cincinnati, OH. They offer comprehensive foot care services for foot and ankle injuries, corns and calluses, nerve issues, odor and sweating, foot pain, and many other conditions.
