Seniors can have an increased risk of oral health issues as a result of medical problems, like heart disease and diabetes, certain medications, or just the natural effects of the aging process. For this reason, taking care of your teeth remains just as important for older individuals as it does for people in other age groups. Below, discover a few suggestions that dentists often give to their senior patients to help maintain oral health.

A Senior's Guide to Dental Care

1. Keep Up With Twice-Daily Brushing & Flossing

Brushing and flossing twice a day is still the best preventative against teeth and gum issues, regardless of your age. But mobility challenges, arthritis, and other health concerns can make it more difficult for a senior to brush effectively.

Consider using an electric toothbrush or a brush with a large grip handle, both of which are easier to hold onto and maneuver around the mouth; you could also cut a small X in the top of a tennis ball and insert the end of the toothbrush into the X, then grip the ball to guide the brush. For flossing, a floss pick or long-handled threader can be helpful.

2. See a Dentist Regularly

Any toothache pain or new sensitivity to hot or cold foods should be checked out by a dentist as well. Do regular self-checks of your mouth at home; if you notice spots or sores that won't heal, lumps, or swelling, schedule a dental exam.

3. Prevent Dry Mouth

Dry mouth is common with advanced age, and it is also a frequent side effect of many medications. But keeping the mouth moist is crucial for oral health, as it naturally rinses away bacteria and food particles that cling to teeth and gums between brushings.

To prevent or manage dry mouth, rinse with a dry mouth mouthwash, sip on water throughout the day, and enjoy the occasional piece of sugarless hard candy or sugarless gum.
