If you commute to work using a car, you touch your keys at least four times a day. For how often they are handled, they are probably rarely cleaned—helping germs to thrive on both the metal key surface and the key fob. The following guide offers advice on how to sanitize yours.

A Guide to Car Key Maintenance

How to Clean Metal Key Components

Car keys with metal parts can be disinfected and cleaned in a variety of ways. Start by removing your keys from auxiliary key chains. Scrub the metal with warm water and soap using a toothbrush to kill germs and remove any debris that’s attached to the material. Before using your car key again, wipe it down with a dry paper towel or soft cloth so it’s fully dry.

Remove rust by soaking the offending part of the key in a mixture of half water and vinegar for 30 minutes, being careful not to get the key fob wet.

How to Clean Your Key Fob

key fobYour key fob contains a specially programmed microchip to lock and unlock your vehicle. While cleansing is important, refrain from submerging it in water as this can be detrimental to the technology within. Instead, clean your key fob using disinfectant wipes.

If you don’t have any of these pre-moistened wipes handy, create your own cleaning solution using four teaspoons of bleach and a quart of water. Dip a cloth or paper towel in the solution and use it to wipe down all sides of your key fob. When going about this task, wear rubber gloves to protect your hands from the bleach solution.
