Many medical practices are offering limited services due to COVID-19, so you must know if your needs qualify before visiting. Luckily, if you experienced a foot injury, many aren't medically serious and can be managed at home. Knowing what is and isn't an emergency will ensure you seek the necessary care and don't overburden your podiatrist, so learn more below.

When to See a Podiatrist

A podiatrist specializes in foot care and is the best resource when you're experiencing significant foot pain, aren't able to put weight on the foot, or have an open wound. They may be able to treat you if their practice is open, and if not, they'll direct you to the ER or an urgent care center.

If swelling continues for several days, or if you lose feeling in your foot, schedule an emergency exam. Seeking professional care is especially crucial if you have diabetes, as you're more likely to develop foot infections.

How to Manage Acute Injuries at Home

Light swelling and infrequent, mild pain or discomfort are common symptoms of acute injuries that can be managed at home. Ankle sprains are a typical example, as well as ongoing conditions, such as plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinitis, that develop from stress and overuse. These don't require emergency care, though you will want to call your podiatrist's office for advice.

Most will recommend the RICE (rest, ice, compress, elevate) method. Take measures to stay off the injured foot for several days. Then, ice the area for 15 minutes at a time to reduce pain and swelling, and use a compression wrap to provide support. Finally, keep your foot elevated while resting to reduce swelling further. Symptoms should improve over a few days. If not, let your podiatrist know.
