Fireplaces and wood stoves can provide an eco-friendly, cost-effective heating solution. To ensure these appliances are safe and working optimally, you may need a chimney liner. These components contain the byproducts of combustion and direct them outside, away from your home. They also protect the chimney walls. While they can last up to 50 years, at some point, liners need to be replaced.

When to Replace Your Chimney Liner

1. Damaged Clay

Many liners are made of clay because of its durability and cost-effectiveness. Inspect the liner to check for cracks or gaps. This type of damage can pose a safety risk as it allows carbon monoxide and embers to escape, increasing the risk of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning. Deterioration can also signal structural damage in the chimney. Schedule a chimney evaluation to ensure more significant repairs aren’t needed.

2. Condensation

chimney linerAirflow is crucial for fireplace efficiency. If there’s not adequate airflow, the fire may need more fuel to heat the space and will produce more creosote. Check for condensation in the flue, which may indicate inadequate airflow or temperature. Do this by inspecting the metal elements you see when looking up the chimney with a flashlight.

3. Fireplace Alterations

If you’ve made changes to the fireplace, you may need a new liner. This includes changing the type of fuel or the structure. For example, installing a fireplace insert may require installing a new metal flue liner, which will connect directly to the insert to ensure adequate ventilation.

4. Unsafe Chimney

If the chimney doesn’t have a liner, the masonry may be compromised and will accumulate excess creosote, which can be a fire hazard. The brick may also be more susceptible to deterioration. Check for signs of discoloration or staining. Also, if the chimney doesn’t extend at least three feet from the roof, a liner will be needed.
