While your septic system works hard underneath your lawn, what is above ground will make or break your property’s curb appeal. It can be challenging to take care of your waste management system and landscaping at the same time. To prevent septic system damage, use the following do’s and don’ts.

Do:

Leave ample room for roots.

If you plant too close to your septic system, the roots are likely to interfere with the tank and drain field. In some cases, they may even puncture or tangle around these parts, causing blockages and backflow.

To be safe, plant trees at least 20 to 30 feet from your septic components. Other plants should be kept 15 to 20 feet away.

Mark the location.

After spending so much time on your landscape, you don’t want to ruin it while locating your septic tank for maintenance. Prepare ahead of time by marking the location of your tank and drain field, either with stakes or potted plants.

Don’t:

Choose especially thirsty plants.

Since there’s no place in your yard with more water and organic matter than your septic system, these plants are much more likely to cut into the pipes or tank. Instead, opt for plants with shallow roots, like shrubs.

Lead traffic toward the system.

No landscape is complete without hardscaping elements, such as pathways, gazebos, or fountains. However you choose to decorate your yard, make sure you’re not leading traffic over the septic system. The pressure of footsteps will compress the soil, putting pressure on the tank and preventing percolation from the drain field.
