Propane is one of the most common, safe, and versatile sources of energy in America, and while serious leaks are rare, propane can be dangerous when inhaled and can ignite quickly when mixed with air. That’s why manufacturers add a distinct skunk or rotten egg smell to the gas for easy detection of a leak. If you think there is a propane leak in your home or business, follow these safety steps to resolve the issue and avoid harm.

3 Steps to Take If You Encounter a Propane Leak

1. Eliminate Heat Sources

Propane can be flammable and combustible when mixed with air, so you should immediately put out any cigarettes or fires in your home or business. Avoid turning on lights or appliances since the electricity from such actions can accidentally spark a fire or explosion.

2. Turn Off The Valves

propanePropane leaks make a hissing sound, which is helpful in letting you know where the tank is, and if the leak has been eliminated. Locate your propane tank and close the valve by turning it to the right (clockwise). This should turn off the main gas supply to your propane tank and prevent more gas from escaping. Make sure you do not hear additional hissing.

3. Leave The Area

Refrain from breathing too much of the proximal air in, since propane poisoning occurs when you inhale propane in its gas form. Propane replaces the oxygen in your lungs and makes breathing difficult, which can lead to poisoning and cause you to pass out. Make sure everyone in your household, including pets, is safely out of the area as quickly as possible. Once everyone is safe, report the leak by calling 911 so professionals can verify it is safe to reenter your home or business.
