In Hawaii's hot weather, your air conditioner is a vital piece of equipment. When it isn't working correctly, you naturally want prompt air conditioning repairs. The more you can tell your HVAC technician about the issue, the easier it will be for them to diagnose and repair the problem, so look for the signs of these common problems.

What's Wrong With Your Air Conditioner?

1. Drainage Problems

Because an AC draws air across a cold surface, it produces lots of condensation. A drip tray under the coil collects the water, and a hose runs outside to drain it.

A clogged hose or cracked tray can cause the condensation to overflow and run out of the unit, leading to visible dampness and stains. You may also notice mold spots or an odor coming from the unit. When this happens, get a professional cleaning quickly to avoid potential health issues from mold exposure.

2. Icing

Air Conditioning RepairWhen the air isn't flowing across the refrigerator coil quickly enough or the coil itself gets too cold, condensation freezes on it instead of dripping down.  As a result, the room doesn’t get cooled down effectively, and the ice can further block airflow and even damage the unit.

Icing issues are most likely when the unit is low on refrigerant and needs to be recharged by an air conditioning repair professional, but they can also indicate a broken fan.

3. Fan Issues

The fan moves air continuously through the unit and distributes it throughout the room. A burnt-out fan motor can make it stop spinning, leading to a lack of cooling and icing problems. If you don't hear the fan when you turn the unit on, call an HVAC service.

You might also hear a grinding, screeching, or buzzing if the fan is out of balance. Not only is the noise annoying, but it also means the motor has to work harder, so it's using more electricity and more likely to burn out.
