When you’re pregnant, proper oral care and routine visits with your dentist are vital to the protection of your teeth and gums. During this time, the gums are more sensitive and teeth are at a greater risk of decay. Here are a few tips for protecting your oral health throughout your pregnancy.

How to Practice Dental Care During Your Pregnancy

1. Continue Brushing Twice a Day

Even though your gum tissue may be more sensitive to the touch, brushing twice daily is still recommended by dentists. You can minimize discomfort by switching to an ultra-soft bristle toothbrush and by using a toothpaste for sensitive teeth. Instead of rinsing with water, protect your teeth by using a fluoride-based mouthwash and avoiding eating or drinking for 30 minutes.

2. Floss Once Per Day

You should floss your teeth once a day. The best time is just before brushing to loosen food particles from hard to reach places. If using regular floss irritates your gums, try switching to a water pick. This can flush out food particles without irritating the gum tissue.

3. Rinse After Morning Sickness

Morning sickness is a frequent symptom of pregnancy and has an impact on oral care. The acid in vomit will soften the tooth enamel, so brushing immediately afterward can remove the protective coating on your teeth.

Instead, mix one teaspoon of baking soda with a cup of water and rinse to wash away the acid and bacteria. You can brush after 30 minutes.

4. See Your Dentist

DentistOnce you know that you’re pregnant, notify the dentist and schedule a teeth cleaning and exam. Even though it may be earlier than your regularly scheduled checkup, a visit with the dentist can protect your teeth and gum tissue throughout pregnancy. The dentist may advise you to take extra steps, such as avoiding sugar and eating more plant-based foods.
