Cars, trucks, and SUVs all need several vital liquids to keep everything running efficiently. These require regular replacement. While some fluids can be topped off at home, for full flushes, you should go to a mechanic shop, where they can also inspect your car for other potential issues.

What Fluids Does Your Car Need?

1. Oil

Oil lubricates the engine to avoid friction and overheating. If oil levels are low, your dashboard light should turn on. Check oil levels by opening the hood and searching for the dipstick, often a bright yellow ring near the top of the oil reservoir. Remove the stick and assess the levels. There should be pinholes in the rod that say L or H for low or high. Top off the tank if the oil residue is near or below the L to keep the engine lubricated.

In addition, most auto manufacturers recommend getting an oil change every six months or 7,500 miles.

2. Transmission Fluid

Car transmissions move power from the engine to the wheels. These systems require lubrication to keep the moving parts cool and transmit power to make the vehicle move. The transmission dipstick should be next to the oil one and requires the same process to check the levels.

Flush your transmission every 30,000 miles, or approximately every two years.

3. Windshield Wiper Fluid

This methanol mix serves as soap to wipe down your auto glass, lubricating the wipers so they can smoothly clear off debris and precipitation. Select a de-icer solution for when it is cold out that can break up ice to improve visibility.

4. Power Steering Fluid

Cars use hydraulic steering to make it easy to turn the wheel. If you begin to have trouble steering, head to a mechanic who will check the power steering fluid and replace it or who can diagnose and repair leaks.
