Heart disease is a term that encompasses many conditions that affect cardiovascular health, from blocked blood vessels to congenital defects. As long as you’re familiar with the earliest signs of trouble, though, you can seek prompt treatment. From chest pain to edema, here are a few symptoms that could be indicative of heart disease.

What Are Some Symptoms of Heart Disease?

1. Chest Pain

Chest pain is a cause for concern. While it can be caused by several issues that have nothing to do with the cardiovascular system, it can also be a sign of underlying trouble. For example, chest pain is the most common symptom of poor circulation to the heart. If left untreated, serious consequences can occur, such as a heart attack.

2. Respiratory Problems

Persistent coughing or wheezing may also warrant cardiovascular care, as respiration is closely tied to circulation.

3. Edema

Characterized by swelling or puffiness of the tissue just beneath the skin, edema in the lower limbs could be a sign of congestive heart failure. When the circulatory system is unable to pump blood effectively, it can pool in the feet and ankles.

When heart disease is to blame, edema is usually accompanied by shortness of breath, called pulmonary edema, because fluid accumulates in the lungs as blood backs up in the legs.
