What Is a Distributor?

Consisting of a cap and a rotor, its main job is to transfer the voltage from the ignition coil to the spark plug. The distributor cap and rotor are key parts of the ignition system.

They must work together with the rest of the engine to ignite the fuel at the right time, increasing the efficiency of the cylinders to maximize power and improve the car’s mileage. Most modern vehicles don’t have distributor caps and rotors. If your car is newer, it likely runs on a fully computerized electronic ignition system.

How Do They Work?

The engine’s camshaft drives distributors. The rotor has a direct connection to the ignition coil via a spring-loaded carbon brush and spins inside the distributor cap, which contains the output contacts. As it spins, the rotor’s tip passes near the output contacts.

These are adjoined to the spark plugs by high tension cables. Through this connection, the high-voltage pulse from the ignition coil can skip the gap between the rotor and contact to reach and ignite the correct spark plug.

Why Is Maintenance Important?

The repeated high voltage transmissions can quickly wear out your distributor cap and rotor, so they will need replacing at the auto repair shop fairly often. A failing distributor can do serious damage to your engine and reduce its efficiency.
