Any tooth extraction involves a brief recovery period, and wisdom teeth removal is no exception. Fortunately, by following a few care tips, you can make the process as smooth as possible. Whether you’re having a single wisdom tooth or all four removed, here’s what to do to support healing after your procedure.

Aftercare for Wisdom Teeth Removal

1. Keep Gauze in Place

Immediately after the procedure, your dentist will likely send you home with gauze in place. Keep the material in your mouth for at least 30 minutes because it will help to control bleeding. Thereafter, you can remove the dressing and throw it away.

2. Control Swelling With Ice

While it’s normal to experience swelling after having your wisdom teeth removed, you can help control the symptom by regularly applying ice packs to the sides of your face. Ice the area for 20-minute intervals, followed by 20-minute breaks, for up to two days.

3. Perform Gentle Oral Care

4. Stick to Soft Foods

To prevent any clots from dislodging and to minimize discomfort, only have liquids and soft foods as you recover. As you begin to heal, you can incorporate foods like mashed potatoes and pasta back into your diet.

5. Curb Discomfort

Following a tooth extraction, you may experience minor discomfort at the site. To control pain, use over-the-counter medications as directed by your dentist.
