Much like people, your dog can also experience the flu. In most cases, canine influenza causes mild symptoms that can be easily managed by you and your pet’s veterinarian. However, it doesn’t hurt to be informed, especially if your dog spends time at dog parks or doggy day cares, where illness is more likely to spread.

What Is Canine Influenza?

Influenza is a virus that causes respiratory symptoms in those affected. When a dog barks or sneezes, infected droplets of saliva spread through the air and are inhaled by other dogs.

Infected dogs can also contaminate objects with their saliva, which is then passed on to other pets through contact. Currently, there are two separate strains of the flu that can impact dogs. They can impact your pet all year long because they lack seasonality.

What Are the Symptoms?

veterinarianIf you’re concerned your pet has been exposed, it helps to know what symptoms to look for. Many canine symptoms are similar to human influenza; coughing, sneezing, runny nose, and fever are all common in dogs who are afflicted. Your pet may also appear lethargic or fatigued. If chest congestion is severe, problems breathing may also occur.

What Should I Know About Treatment & Prevention?

While there is no cure for viral infections, you should still visit your veterinarian when symptoms arise. Your vet can administer treatments to ease symptoms and ensure your dog is comfortable until the infection subsides. It may also be necessary to quarantine your dog to prevent spread to other animals, and your vet will provide insight on how long quarantine should last.

Your veterinarian may also recommend a flu vaccine if your pet is at high risk.
