Whether you're undertaking a rigorous weightlifting regimen or just getting your heartrate up with more frequent walks or runs, an injury can derail any progress made and lead to significant pain and a lengthy recovery. For these reasons, it is essential that anyone who exercises be proactive in injury prevention. Below are a few tips to help you in this process.

How to Prevent Exercise-Related Injuries

1. Go Slow

If you're just getting started with a fitness routine, good intentions might inspire you to start strong right out of the gate. This can be a serious misstep, however, because your body may need time to adjust to the new activities being asked of it.

Instead, start off slowly and always listen to your body and its needs. It's fine to push yourself once in a while, but not to the extent that pain is unbearable. With cardio, begin with 10 or 15 minutes a few times a week, and work your way up to at least 30 minutes each day.

With weightlifting, start with lighter weights and gradually build up from there, sticking with a set for at least a week before upgrading. And recovery is critical, too, so schedule a day or two off each week.

2. Practice Good Form

weightliftingProper form ensures the body has the structural support it needs to hold you up and distribute weight evenly. Bad form includes hunching the back when bending over; straining the knees over the toes during lunges; and improper lifting technique when weightlifting.

To check your form, aim to exercise in front of a mirror for the first few sessions. Also, consult a personal training professional before starting your program, so you can get off on the right foot and start with good habits in place.

3. Don't Neglect a Proper Warmup

The warmup is not an optional part of any exercise routine. It eases your body into more intensive movements, gradually increases heartrate, gets the blood flowing, and oxygenates your system.

It also helps loosen tight muscles, making them suppler and better prepared for a rigorous workout. Exercising without warming up can cause muscle injuries, like strains and sprains, and you won't reap the full rewards of your workout, either.
