Hooded eyelids can fall into two categories. The first is a clinical issue known as ptosis, in which the upper part of the lid droops downward. The second type is the result of the natural shape of one's eyes, in which an extra layer of skin droops over the crease in the eyelids. In either case, facial cosmetic surgery can offer a solution. Learn more about these conditions, how they affect the eyes, and possible treatment options.

Eyelid Conditions

Ptosis

A person can be born with ptosis, or they may develop it later in life, usually as a result of a facial injury or damage to the nerves that regulate eyelid movement. In some cases, it can be a natural part of the aging process. In rare instances, it might indicate a serious issue like a brain tumor or stroke.

When the condition is congenital, children with ptosis may develop amblyopia, also known as lazy eye, or they may experience vision problems.

When the condition appears in adults, the affected eye will look smaller than normal. While this reduction is typically not painful, it can limit one's full field of vision.

Hooded Eyes

facial cosmetic surgerySome people's eyes are naturally hooded due to an additional flap of skin that hangs over the eyelid crease. When looking in the mirror, you will not be able to see the crease in your eyelid. Your eyes appear smaller, and you might look drowsy even when fully awake.

Hooded eyes are solely cosmetic issues. If they start to impair a person's vision, they then fall under the category of ptosis. While they can still be treated cosmetically, they should also be checked out by a doctor to rule out other causes.

Treatments

The most common facial cosmetic surgery intervention is blepharoplasty, which removes excess skin from the eyelid to restore a wider look to the eye and a fuller range of vision.

Bear in mind that because ptosis can be a symptom of more serious health concerns, other treatments may be necessary, depending on the precise cause of the condition.
