If you experience a blowout or a flat tire while driving, you must know how to change it or call for professional help. However, once you have your spare in place, that doesn't mean you can immediately move on. If you're in this situation, practice the following do's and don'ts to ensure you and your car stay safe.

Do:

Maintain your tire.

Periodically check on your spare to ensure it's in good shape and has enough air pressure, especially before setting out on a long drive. The last thing you want is to find your extra tire unusable when you need it most. Also, if you've had a spare sitting in your trunk for over eight years, switch it out for a new one.

Watch your distance.

tiresBe mindful of how many miles you put on your spare tire. Your owner's manual will state how much it can handle before it'll begin to affect other areas of your vehicle, such as the differential that sends power to your wheels. Usually, you should only drive on it for around 50 miles. These tires are meant to be temporary to get you to a safe location for auto repair, and they shouldn't be used to replace your actual tire.

Don’t:

Drive normally.

Your car will handle differently with a compact donut attached. Be mindful of how you take corners and give yourself enough space and time to brake. Also, avoid cruise control and remember that having a spare on your car will disable certain systems, such as electronic stability and traction control. Your anti-lock braking system warning light may also turn on since spares rotate more quickly, and the sensors will note the difference.

Speed.

You must slow down when operating a car with a spare—particularly a donut that isn't full size. Keep your speed under 50 mph and travel with your hazards on in the right lane so other drivers are aware of your situation and can pass safely.
