Brandy and cognac are two types of popular spirits that often get lumped into the same category. Both drinks contain a similar amount of alcohol, but beyond that, there are key characteristics that make each of these drinks enjoyable in different ways. In this guide, you’ll learn about these two spirits and how they differ from one another.

What Is Brandy?

Brandy is a liquor that’s derived from fermented fruit juice. Any type of juice can yield brandy, but grape juice is the most popular base for the drink. It’s a strong, sweet-tasting liquor that people have produced ever since the discovery of the distillation process.

Today, most types of brandy are distilled and then aged in oak barrels to bring out key flavors. Some common varieties of brandy include Armagnac, Calvados, American brandy, applejack, pisco, and grappa.

Each type differs because of where it’s produced as well as the distillation process required to create it. Brandy can have an alcohol content of up to 60%.

What Is Cognac?

alcoholCognac is a special form of brandy that’s made in the Cognac area in France. Similar drinks that aren’t made in this region are normally considered to be brandies. Cognac is produced in specific conditions and is commonly made with ugni blanc grapes. At a minimum, it has an alcohol content of 40%.

Cognac goes through two distillation rounds between October 1 and March 31. Then, the drink is stored in barrels and marked with one of three designations: VS (Very Special) for cognac that’s been aged for at least two years, VSOP (Very Special Old Pale) for an aging process that lasts at least four years, and XO (Extra Old) for cognac that’s been aged six years or more.
