While many retailers advertise their wet wipes as flushable products, these claims are not entirely true. In reality, sending these down your toilet can lead to clogged drains, blocked sewers, and other damage that requires costly repairs. The guide below explains why these wipes are problematic.

The Issue With “Flushable” Wipes

Most wet wipe companies take liberties when applying the terms “flushable” or “septic-safe” to their products. In fact, according to one study conducted by Ryerson University in Ontario, Canada, of the 23 wet wipes labeled “flushable” by their manufacturer, not one was able to disperse through the sewer system test without causing a problem.

This is because even if a wipe is biodegradable, it may not break down fast enough to make it through a plumbing system without blocking your pipes. These wipes can also stick to other items floating in your sewer line—such as sanitary pads, dental floss, or cotton balls—creating a tough and messy type of blockage plumbers refer to as “ragging.”

Types of Damage Flushed Wet Wipes Can Cause

Nebraska clogged drainsIn addition to causing clogged drains and backflow, flushed wipes can create problems that extend beyond individual households. They can block entire city sewage lines, as well as damage industrial wastewater equipment. Once a mass of flushed wipes gets into the public waterways, it can also pollute the water, endanger wildlife, and cause other long-term environmental damage.

What You Can Do

Given the above, do not flush wet wipes down your toilet. Even if a company claims their products won’t cause clogged drains, it’s not worth the risk. If you’re experiencing frequent slow draining or sewage backups and are not sure of the cause, a plumber can inspect your system and diagnose the problem.
