With businesses closed across the country and millions of people under quarantine, we’re facing an unprecedented and stressful situation. Coping with the pressure of canceled plans, financial anxiety, hampered freedoms and an uncertain future can be extremely difficult, especially without the support of a compassionate therapist. As the world waits for an end to the pandemic, it’s important to look after yourself and develop the skills for managing stress.

A Guide to Coping With the Stress of COVID-19

How Stress Can Affect You

Long-term stress can be physically and psychologically destructive, especially for those with chronic medical conditions. The stress of worrying about your health, the welfare of your loved ones, not being able to travel and reach out as before, and the loss of your day-to-day life can interfere with sleep patterns, cause changes in eating habits, and provoke sudden mood swings. Without access to normal coping mechanisms, many people turn to alcohol, drugs, overeating, over-shopping, and other potentially harmful methods to self-medicate and/or self-soothe.

Stress Reactions Vary From Person to Person

therapist- JuneauWhile everyone is dealing with the same stressful situation, we each tend to react differently. Some of us may retreat entirely and stop taking care of themselves, while others may fall into patterns of substance abuse or other possibly destructive soothing behaviors. People at higher risk of being infected by COVID-19, like health care workers, the elderly, and those with autoimmune conditions, may have more pronounced reactions to stress.

How to Cope

One of the best ways to reduce your stress levels is to take a break from watching and reading the news. Instead, focus on the well-being of those closest to you; exercise and recreate with your family, take steps to get to postponed projects, or try learning new skills together. Keeping connections alive with distant friends and family members will also help you find meaning and joy away in this difficult time.

If you’re still experiencing feelings of depression or anxiety, consider speaking with a skilled therapist. Many mental health care professionals are offering services online, giving you access to valuable support from the comfort and safety of your home.
