If there's been a death in your community, it's always considerate to send flowers to the funeral. Finding the right words to express your sympathies is never easy, but thankfully, flowers have an impactful meaning, representing different emotions and intentions. While the arrangement type matters based on the culture, they’re typically used to express love, admiration, strength, and purity in the West. Here are some basic guidelines on deciding which funeral flowers would be best to send.

Arrangement Type & Size

Determining the size of the arrangement generally depends on the relationship you have with the deceased or their family. If they were relatives or close friends, a large arrangement, such as a standing spray or wreath, is preferable. Otherwise, it's more appropriate to send a bouquet or a small basket.

The exception to this is if you're sending flowers as a group gift with other family members, friends, or co-workers. If you're part of a large group, everyone can pitch in for a larger arrangement.

Traditional Options & Their Meanings

  • White Lily: Representative of purity and renewal, this summer bloom is a popular choice. They're appropriate for most grieving situations.
  • Rose: Beloved all year round, roses come in a plethora of colors, all conveying varying degrees of affection. For example, yellow roses are tied to friendship, pink to gratitude, and red to romance. White roses are similar to lilies and carry a sense of innocence to them.
  • Orchid: While red roses symbolize romantic love, orchids are linked with the notion of eternal love. As cut flowers, they can last quite a while, but to emphasize the sense of longevity, they can be gifted as plants.
  • Gladiolus: With blooms that range between three to five inches in size, gladioli represent strength and integrity. The name itself comes from the Latin word for sword, “gladius.” They can convey the character of the person who has passed as well as the resilience of those who are in mourning.
