If you have a bathroom remodeling project planned, choose low-flow toilets, faucets, and showerheads to make your home more efficient and save money. Below is a brief guide on how to choose the right fixtures.

Basics

Low-flow fixtures use less water than traditional versions. While regular-flow showerheads use up to 5.5 gallons per minute (gpm), you can rely on low-flow versions to use less than 2.5 gpm—some even use less than 2 gpm. Laminar-flow showerheads offer individual streams, accurate temperature controls, and aerating options to create misting effects.

Newer toilets can be low-flush or ultra-low-flush, also using about half the water than traditional models. Usage drops from 3.5 gallons per flush (gpf) to around 1.6 gpf, and some versions can even allow you to choose between a half flush for liquid waste and a full flush for solids. Drainage areas are also wider for less clogging.

Replace sink faucets as part of your bathroom remodeling project because low-flow versions drop gallons per minute from 2.2 to less than 1.5. If you aren’t ready to replace the entire faucet, you can also install an aerator that will restrict flow and reduce usage.

Benefits

bathroom remodelingThe most significant advantage of installing high-efficiency fixtures is cost savings. Because they save so many gallons of water, your utility bill should drastically decrease. Conserving water also reduces the strain on your septic system since there is less water flowing entering the tank with each flush.

Water conservation goes beyond your home. It protects the environment and reduces water pollution, making fresh, clean water more accessible around the world. It also reduces strain on resources in the environment to ensure enough quality water is available.

How to Choose

Look for fixtures with WaterSense labels, which denote products designed and approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). These features are efficient, meet the standards set out by the EPA, and use at least 20% less water than traditional models. WaterSense designs are also easy to install, whether you choose new fixtures or you add aerators to existing faucets.
