Sprained ankles are common injuries that occur when the ligaments are stretched too far or torn, causing pain, swelling, and difficulty walking. While you should visit urgent care for major injuries, most sprained ankles are mild and can be treated at home. Here’s what you can do.

How to Recover From a Sprained Ankle

1. Use Compression

Compression is used to control swelling and should be applied soon after the injury occurs. Gently wrap an elastic bandage around your ankle until the swelling subsides. Wrap it snug enough that it won’t come loose, but not so tight that it cuts off blood circulation.

2. Apply Ice

Use the pack in 10-minute intervals, giving yourself 10 minutes of rest in between. Do this every two hours for the first three days of the injury. Elevation will fight swelling. When seated, keep your sprained ankle propped up as high as possible, preferably above your heart level. This helps drain the excess fluid that worsens swelling.
