After months of practicing, you’re finally ready to sign up for your road test. However, there may be some misconceptions about the exam standing between you and your driver’s license. To learn the truth about this assessment before you head to the DMV, review the guide below.

Common Misconceptions About the Road Test

1. Slow & Steady Is Always Best

While speeding is certainly frowned-upon by examiners, it's also important not to go too far below the speed limit. Even if you're not driving recklessly, driving too slowly may still translate as an inability to keep track of the speed limit. Additionally, driving too slowly can be dangerous, especially when merging on a highway or approaching an intersection.

2. You Shouldn’t Schedule an End-of-Week Test

This myth is based on the idea that driving examiners can only pass a certain number of student drivers per week. If that were the case, by the end of the week, you could be refused based on the quota alone. However, there's no limit to how many new licenses can be issued, so simply choose a day where you're not busy to ensure you can take the road test with a clear head.

3. Second Time’s Always the Charm

Many drivers who fail the road test the first time around attribute their score to a fluke or a biased examiner and sign up for a re-do. However, in most cases, your failing score was due to an error on your part. If you don't find out what went wrong and practice accordingly, you're likely to fail the second test too. For this reason, ask the examiner what you can improve on, and work with an instructor before your next test.
