The viola is a string instrument, larger than a violin and with a deeper sound. To enjoy your viola and allow others to enjoy it too, you’ll need to practice regularly. Use these helpful tips to improve your practice and get the most out of playing your instrument.

How to Improve at Viola

1. Create a Practice Space & Schedule

Not everyone has the space for a practice room, but you can still create a space that has everything you require for productive practice. Choose a space that has minimal distractions, and equip it with your music stand, sheet music, viola, and good lighting.

Work with your instructor to come up with a practice schedule that fits your goals. With a clear and set schedule, it’ll be harder to skip practice and others will know not to interrupt you.

2. Switch Up Practice Sessions

violaDon’t stick to the same routine in every practice session. There are three main types of practice: practicing technique, practicing new material, or practicing for an upcoming performance. You might focus on one or multiple during each session, as long as you’re clear with yourself about the objective of each exercise.

If you’re stressed about an upcoming performance and have been going over one piece repeatedly, take some time to play another one you know and love. Try to have fun and remember how you enjoy the instrument and have successfully learned other pieces.

3. Warm-Up & Maintain Healthy Posture

Warm-ups are essential to keeping you healthy and comfortable. They might feel tedious, but doing warm-ups, like flexor stretches, will keep your fingers and wrists flexible.

In addition to following a warm-up schedule, focus on maintaining the correct posture to promote painless playing. If you are standing, don’t lock your knees and stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. If you’re seated, choose a chair that’s firm (so you don’t sink into it) and sit up straight. Sitting at the front of the chair can also help prevent slouching.
