When people think of swimming pools, they often think of crystal clear blue water. However, a lack of proper pool care and maintenance can turn the waters into other colors that may or may not be problematic. Learn about some of the circumstances that promote discoloration and how to fix it below.

What Causes Pool Water to Change Colors?

When chlorine is added to water that contains too many minerals or metals, the interaction between the metal and chlorine causes a chemical reaction called oxidation that alters the color. The color of the water usually provides an understanding of which minerals may be present in your pool:

  • Green: Copper or iron is likely present.
  • Purple: The lining of your swimming pool may turn a deep purple if manganese or copper is inside the water.
  • Reddish Brown: Manganese, iron, and copper will also turn the water red or brown.

Algae is another reason why your pool could lose its blue coloring. Extensive algae growth can leave water looking green or yellow.

One way to distinguish between an algae and metal problem is murkiness; algae will alter the clarity of the water as well as the color. If you see black spots along the walls, your issue could be black algae, not excessive minerals.

How Can You Restore the Normal Blue Hue?

pool careThe color change to your pool isn’t permanent. An experienced pool care service can make several adjustments to bring the water back to a desirable blue shade.

First, they will test the water to determine if it’s an algae or mineral issue. To address the former, they may shock the pool by adding additional chlorine or an algaecide solution, then remove traces of the dead algae with a vacuum.

For a mineral imbalance, the pool care professional will test the water to determine which metal is causing the discoloration. Then they’ll apply the appropriate metal remover solution. They may also install a pool filter that filters out metals before you fill your pool.
