Intrauterine insemination (IUI) treatments have helped countless couples start a family. Although it’s a common procedure, some patients may not be familiar with the treatment when they first consider it. If you want to explore IUI treatments further, use this guide to get started.

What to Know About IUI Treatments

How does it work?

An IUI treatment uses a catheter to deliver concentrated sperm directly into the uterus when an egg is released. A sperm sample is first collected then cleaned to remove anything that may interfere with fertility. The goal is that the sperm will travel to and fertilize the egg, resulting in pregnancy.

Who’s a candidate?

iui treatmentCandidates can be tested at a fertility clinic. Ideally, they should have healthy hormone levels and enough eggs in their ovaries. The male partner will also have to produce enough sperm, and the fallopian tubes have to be healthy, so sperm can travel freely.

Are there risks?

IUI treatment is considered safe and has few risks. However, there’s a small risk of infection, and the catheter may cause slight bleeding. If patients take ovulation-inducing medication, there’s also an increased possibility of multiple pregnancies.

When will we know if it worked?

Success rates vary between 6 and 26% per cycle, and you should use an at-home pregnancy test two weeks after the procedure. Taking the test too early can result in false-negative or -positive results. If the procedure isn’t successful, you may be able to try again for several months. If repeated attempts don’t work, a reproductive endocrinologist may recommend another treatment.
