Before starting a bathroom remodeling project, whether to install a new shower enclosure or bathtub might cross your mind. In addition to comfort and lifestyle, which fixture saves more water should factor into the decision-making process. To keep utility costs low, learn more about the water conservation capabilities of showers and bathtubs.

Short Showers Conserve the Most Water

Generally speaking, bathers use fewer gallons of water when taking short showers compared to soaking in the bath. Taking an eight- to 12-minute shower, for example, using a standard showerhead is roughly the equivalent of filling the tub with 20 to 30 gallons of water—or half full.

remodelingTo use fewer gallons of water showering in this time frame, replace standard showerheads with WaterSense® models when bathroom remodeling. Instead of 2.5 gallons per minute, these efficient showerheads use 1.5 or 2 gallons per minute. This means you’d only use 20 gallons of water for a 10-minute shower, with even more savings for shorter showers.

Consider Bathtub Size to Conserve Water

When filled to the rim, most bathtubs hold about 36 gallons of water. To prevent tubs from overflowing while bathing, people usually only fill them to the halfway point. If you want to invest in a bathtub, look over options carefully with a bathroom remodeling contractor. They will point you in the direction of suitable models that hold fewer than 36 gallons. This means filling halfway will use fewer than 20 or 30 gallons of water for more savings.
