Crusher run is a popular building material that is a blended mixture of fine and coarse aggregate. It is often also referred to as road stone, quarry process (QP), and dense grade aggregate (DGA). As you plan a project, such as laying a driveway or working with concrete, you’ll need to learn more about using this material.

An Introduction to Crusher Run

What are the benefits?

The mixture of crushed rock and stone dust creates unique benefits that other aggregates don’t offer. It has a low void content, which means there is not much space for air between the pieces of larger rock. The stone dust fills that void, which makes the material ideal for sturdy construction, compaction, and drainage. It is affordable and durable, which makes it a budget-friendly choice.

What is it used for?

crusher runThis versatile material is used in a wide range of projects. Loose-fill driveways and roads are a popular application, since the stone pieces will not shift much. The material will compact and get more stable as vehicles move across the surface. It is also used as a base filler for concrete and asphalt, backfilling utility lines, and laying masonry.

How much do I need?

Your stone supplier will give you DGA by the ton. Begin by determining how much your project requires. Multiply the square footage by the depth you need in feet. Divide this number by 27 to convert cubic feet to cubic yards. Multiply by 2,500 to find the total weight in pounds, then divide by 2,000 to find the number of tons needed.

What depth do I need?

How deep you want to lay the material will depend on the project. Generally, you will need 4 inches for a base filler. A subbase can be between 3 and 4 inches. Surfacing work requires 2 to 3 inches.
