Even though metal is a reliable, long-lasting construction material, the roof of your metal building may still need repairs occasionally. However, it isn’t always easy to tell when attention is required, and not recognizing the signs could lead to additional problems. Below are some key indicators that you need metal roof repairs.

How to Know If You Need Metal Roof Repairs

1. Worn Paint

Paint acts as a shield that protects your metal roof against moisture and ultraviolet radiation, preventing corrosion, deterioration, and leaks. Unfortunately, paint can suffer damage due to hailstorms, overhanging branches, and other impacts.

If you spot areas of significant paint loss or peeling on your metal roof, it's time to have it inspected for problems. You should also have it repainted to coat the material with the protective layer.

2. Rust or Corrosion

metal buildingRust occurs when bare metal comes into contact with oxygen and iron. Other metals also corrode, but rust is particular to iron and its alloys, such as steel. Rust weakens the metal by replacing the strong material with an orange, powdery substance that has nowhere near the same tensile strength or durability.

Rust compromises the roof's structural integrity and can eat holes through the panels to let rain inside. Don't delay scheduling metal building repair if you notice corrosion on your roof.

3. Missing or Damaged Panels

Falling limbs or storm-buffeted branches can leave punctures in your roof, while heavy winds can tear off the metal panels. If you spot these types of damage, your structure could be vulnerable to moisture intrusion.

This could not only dampen and rot the supporting structure of the building, but it could also damage the contents inside. Protect your belongings by having missing panels replaced as soon as you notice them.
