Selecting a toothbrush seems like a straightforward process, but with all the options available today, it can get a little overwhelming. Your choice should be one that allows you to brush your teeth according to your dentist's recommendations. Here’s some information on the different features available to determine which option is best suited for your mouth.

Power Options

When used correctly, traditional manual toothbrushes are effective at keeping teeth clean. However, if you have arthritis, wear braces, or have misaligned teeth, a powered toothbrush is often a better choice.

Electronic brushes can be comfortably held and used without using too much hand pressure. They’re also better at removing debris from uneven surfaces. Some electric toothbrushes also have timer settings to make sure you’re brushing for the full amount of dentist-recommended time.

Brush Shape, Size, & Style

dentistMost people should only brush with soft bristles. They effectively remove food and plaque without damaging the enamel.

Medium bristles are stiffer but shouldn’t harm the tooth enamel. When used daily, however, they can tear the gums and cause bleeding.

Hard bristles are typically only recommended by dentists for stain removal or denture cleanings. Using this type on an everyday basis can seriously harm the enamel and gum lining.

After selecting the bristle type, look at the size of the toothbrush head. It should be small enough to comfortably fit in your mouth and reach all of your teeth. For most adults, this is a half-inch wide and one-inch tall head. The handle should also be long enough for you to comfortably grip.
