When someone close to you has suffered a loss, sending flowers is always a kind gesture. While figuring out which bouquet to deliver can be a challenge, there are certain options with particular connotations and widely understood meanings. If you are unsure about what kind of flowers would be most appropriate for a funeral service, here are a few guidelines to help you get started.

How to Choose Flowers for a Funeral Service

Arrangement Types

funeral servicesIf you were close to the person who passed or their family, large flower baskets or wreaths are much appreciated. You could also send a houseplant, such as a Peace Lily or an orchid. Since they remain fresh indefinitely, they’re representative of fortitude. Flowering plants offer an additional meaning, thanks to the cyclicality of the blooms. Although the flowers will eventually fall off, new buds will appear and serve as a reminder that life continues.

If you weren’t necessarily close, however, you may want to opt for a smaller arrangement, such as a modest bouquet. Alternatively, you could offer to pitch in for a group gift with other coworkers, friends, or family members.

Color Meanings

White flowers communicate elegance, innocence, and reverence. They’re a classic choice, no matter the relationship. White lilies, in particular, are some of the most popular for a funeral.

To convey a sense of gratitude and grace, go with pink flowers, like a carnation. For friendship and to celebrate a person’s life, choose yellow. For romantic love, strength, and respect, the most succinct color is red.

Location

Finally, the arrangement you choose will depend on the location you’re sending it to. Unless instructed otherwise, it’s best to send large arrangements to the location where the funeral services will be held.

For smaller bouquets or houseplants, they can usually be sent directly to the family’s home. When in doubt, go with the location of the service.
