Grubs are insects that live in your landscaping and feed in the soil. They can be problematic for your lawn care routine since they feast on roots in the grass, leaving behind brown patches and excessive damage. Here are a few important facts to know about grubs.

Common Questions About Grubs

What are grubs?

Grubs, also called white grubs, are the C-shaped larval or worm state of certain types of beetles.  First, these insects lay eggs in your lawn in late summer, and then when they reach this worm stage, they hatch and find their way into the soil, with most damage from their burrowing occurring in the fall.

Once warm weather comes around again, they return to the surface to feed on grassroots and other organic matter, eventually maturing into adult beetles.

What are the signs of grubs?

lawn careWhen your lawn pulls up easily, you most likely have white grubs in the top layer. If turf pulls away from the ground completely, your root system may already be compromised. If you see more than 10 grubs per square foot, you have an infestation that needs attention.

You may also notice brown, wilted areas and very active beetles around your landscaping. Another sign of a problem is wildlife tearing up your lawn. Raccoons, crows, skunks, and moles nibble on grubs and will pull at your grass to find them.

Do grubs die in winter?

Because they burrow in the soil for warmth, they will not disappear in winter or at all unless you take action. In late summer, lawn care professionals can help apply insecticides to curb infestations and stop damage.

Is there a way to keep grubs out completely?

Grub treatments in spring are best, but they must be applied annually to remain effective. While insecticides will work for the entire season, these critters will find a way to return unless you keep up with regular maintenance each year.
