Mosquitoes buzzing around your property can be annoying, making it difficult to relax and enjoy your free time. Additionally, these insects can also carry germs that cause serious health problems, like encephalitis and Zika virus disease. Here are a few pest management tips to prevent mosquitoes from being a problem in and around your home.

3 Tips for Mosquito Management

1. Clean Up Your Yard

Mosquitoes breed and hatch their young in standing water, so eliminate any sources in your yard. Drain unused water features, flip over chairs after a rainstorm, and pick up children’s toys. Keep your yard as tidy as possible, and avoid unnecessary decorations that could create a space for water to pool.

2. Irrigate Properly

Sprinklers and ground irrigation keep your lawn green and lush, but too much water can create a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Use a water meter in your grass, and give your lawn about 1–1.5 inches of water per week. Watering infrequently helps your grass develop deeper roots while also promoting pest management.

3. Keep Your Gutters Clean

After you’ve cleaned out the gutters, run a hose into the troughs to check if water pools anywhere along your roofline. If certain areas allow water to accumulate, talk with a contractor to fix the roof.
