Vinyl is a popular fencing material because it’s low-maintenance, affordable, and easy to install. But you should understand how to care for vinyl before purchasing this option. Here are three maintenance tips to keep this fencing in top shape.

3 Vinyl Fencing Care Tips

1. Rinse the Surface

Vinyl doesn’t have pores, so any dirt or pollen staining the surface will be easy to remove with water. Run a garden hose with a pressured attachment over the fencing material. Keep in mind that a pressure washer uses too much water and may damage the vinyl.

2. Scrub Stains

If your vinyl fence features a solid surface, remove stains with a kitchen sponge. For those that feature lines to make them look like wood, use a gentle scrub brush for stubborn markings like berry marks or bird droppings.

If you need to remove iron stains from door hardware, you can use bleach or other rust-removing cleaners. These options will clean the fencing material, but they may kill grass and plants nearby or contaminate the water table.

If the fence stains aren’t coming off, use green cleaners like vinegar and lemon water to limit the effect on nearby water sources and greenery.

3. Inspect the Gates

Many fences have gates for easy entry and exits. Over time, the hardware can grow rusty and require replacement.

Inspect the hinges and door latches every month or two to ensure the gate is operable. If the gate is too heavy or drags along the ground, install a wheel to help it glide over the surface.
