With summer coming soon, you might be planning a big backyard barbecue for friends and family. When you’re anticipating a large crowd, a keg of beer is sure to please. While tapping a keg can seem complex if it’s your first time, the below guide will clear up any confusion.

A Guide to Tapping a Keg

1. Chill the Keg

No one wants a foamy beer. While your pouring technique plays a role, the coldness of the brew also prevents foam from taking over. For this reason, you should chill the entire keg with ice, not just the bottom portion. If you don’t have a large enough bucket or container, fill a clean trash can with ice and place the keg in it a few hours before serving. This ensures your guests have cold, refreshing beverages ready when they arrive.

2. Tap & Engage

beerDepending on the type of alcohol you have, the couplers and taps will be different, but the process for opening them is similar. Before attaching the valve, remove any plastic or cardboard from the coupling. Next, ensure the handle for the tap is in the off position, and align it with the coupler on the keg. Then, fully insert the tap and turn it clockwise until it locks to engage it. Finally, push the pump handle down to allow the beer to flow.

3. Pour the Drink

There is an art to pouring a beer from a keg, one that you should master to ensure a nice, even flow. The first beer will be mostly foam because the carbonation in the brew excites when the tap allows air inside. Put this one aside and focus your efforts on the next one. Position the cup at a 45-degree angle while the alcohol flows, and gently turn it upright while pouring. This will prevent the foam head from overtaking the drink.
