If you won’t be driving your car for a while, leaving it on the street or in an open parking lot isn’t the smartest move. You want to protect your vehicle as much as possible so it will be ready for use when you need it again. Putting an automobile into long-term car storage is a process; here’s a list of five steps you should take.

How to Prepare a Vehicle for Long-Term Car Storage

1. Change the Oil & Refuel the Tank

Because motor oil picks up contaminants while in use, change it if you’re storing a car for more than 30 days to prevent engine damage. Oil in an idle car will thicken, so your manual may recommend you change it every six months even if no one’s using the vehicle.

Also, fill the tank to keep moisture out and inhibit rust from forming. Moreover, adding a stabilizer will help prevent gas from expiring.

2. Clean It

3. Put On a Cover

A weatherproof car cover will provide an extra layer of protection for a vehicle in long-term storage. Choose one that you can anchor down and is guaranteed to fit your make and model.

4. Jack It Up

Inflate the tires to the recommended pressure before storing the car. Also, unless you’re making arrangements to have someone drive it on occasion while you’re away, prop it up with jacks. When cars sit too long, the tires may develop flat spots where the wheels rest against the concrete.

5. Disconnect the Battery

Unplug the battery because it will likely drain while in storage. Loosen the cable to the negative terminal and remove it.

When you’re ready to drive again, you can simply reconnect the cable and start it up. When the car powers on, drive it for a while to give the alternator time to recharge the battery.
