Porcelain sinks add timeless beauty to any kitchen or bathroom. While porcelain isn’t vulnerable to chips and stains from soap, hard water, and food debris because of its non-porous nature, its beautiful white finish is. Here, review a few tips for cleaning your porcelain sink to keep it looking fantastic.

How to Clean a Porcelain Sink

1. Start Gently

Saturate a clean sponge with warm water and add a few drops of liquid dish detergent for a sudsy result. Gently scrub the porcelain sink to remove light soap scum or food stains. Never use scouring pads or other abrasive implements that can scratch the material. Clean the entire surface and dry it with a towel before examining the sink for remaining stains. Severe stains require more powerful cleaning products to restore the white surface.

2. Target Soap, Grease, & Food Stains

porcelain sinksLift tough stains from food and soap with liquid oxygen bleach (hydrogen peroxide). Chlorine bleach may be an option as long as the sink isn’t vintage or colored, since the liquid can cause damage to these finishes.

Alternately, you can use 1 tablespoon of ammonia in a gallon of hot water to eliminate severe stains such as thick grease and soap scum. Never mix bleach and ammonia, as it creates noxious fumes that can cause respiratory problems and seizures, among other health issues.

3. Address Rust Stains

Deal with rust and hard water stains using an acidic liquid such as lemon juice or white vinegar. Let the acid work on the stains for a few minutes before rinsing with water. Again, do not use abrasive scrubbing tools or cleaners. You can also add Borax to lemon juice to create a rust-dissolving paste. Apply this on the stained area with a washcloth or sponge, wait a few seconds, then rinse.
