If you’ve torn your rotator cuff or sustained another type of injury in the area, your doctor may recommend shoulder surgery to fix the issue. This procedure is extremely common and has a high success rate, so you’ll only need to focus on recovery once you get home. Your approach to recovery can significantly influence the healing process, so follow this helpful care guide.

Do:

Update your home.

Before the surgery, prepare your home to make it more amenable. Install a grip bar in the shower to help you maintain balance, and add more cushions to the bed to support your shoulder and reduce strain. Make sure your necessities, including toiletries and clothing, are easy to reach with your non-affected side.

You should also prepare several meals in advance and freeze them, so you won’t have to cook during the first few weeks of recovery. Stock up on easy-to-eat foods, such as salads, cereals, and snacks, since you may be using one hand for a while.

Follow your doctor’s orders.

shoulder surgeryYour doctor will likely advise you to refrain from activities that may hinder the healing process, like driving and lifting heavy objects. Soon after the surgery, your physician will recommend that you attend physical therapy. These sessions will help you achieve passive movement to keep the arm flexible and limber during recovery.

Don’t:

Overuse the shoulder.

While it’s important to perform any exercises as directed by your doctor or physical therapist, you should never over-exert your shoulder. Pressure on the shoulder or arm can be painful and may slow the healing process. You shouldn’t stretch or shrug your shoulder or lift or lean on the hand of the affected side.

Rush recovery.

Healing from shoulder surgery typically takes six weeks or less. Using the shoulder before it’s fully healed can result in pain or additional damage. Resuming activity early will also increase your chances of injuring other body parts, like the elbow or spine. Even if you’re feeling little or no discomfort, refrain from putting a strain on the shoulder until given clearance by your doctor.
