When it comes to overhead doors, springs are what keep the doors securely closed and make them slide open. There are two types of garage door springs: torsion and extension. They differ in configuration and efficiency. Below is a brief overview of each type.

Torsion Springs

Torsion springs are positioned above the door they operate, either in the center or one at each side. They consist of a spring fitted on a shaft, with cones at the end instead of loops. When the door operates, the springs twist on the shaft instead of being stretched out, creating a fluid motion.

Unlike extension springs, torsion springs don’t put as much strain on your motor because it doesn’t exert as much energy turning the springs as compared to stretching them. Torsion springs are durable and last up to 20,000 cycles. Because of this and the fewer parts involved, they don’t often need spring repairs. On the infrequent occasion they do break, the pieces don’t pose a hazard because they stay on the shaft, instead of flying off.

Extension Springs

garage door-Eureka, Montana If your garage door has extension springs, they’ll be positioned on each side of the door. Extension springs have a loop on each end and are connected to pulleys to operate the door. During operation, the springs stretch taut and then contract to a relaxed state to provide leverage.

Extension springs are affordable, but they strain the motor of your overhead door because they have a lurching, uneven motion when the door opens and closes. They also are dangerous when they break, as the pieces can go flying into other objects. They’re notorious for needing spring repairs, as the pulleys, springs, and cables can all break, and they have an estimated lifespan of 10,000 cycles.
