Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, and other small dogs are lovable companions for apartment dwellers, homeowners with small yards, and anyone who wants a furry friend that can fit in their lap. Adopting a dog is a major commitment, though, and small breeds are uniquely vulnerable to several health issues. Before you welcome a tiny canine into your home, review their pet care needs so you’re familiar with their most common health concerns.

3 Common Health Issues in Small-Breed Dogs

1. Hypothermia

Small dogs often have trouble maintaining their body temperature in cold environments. Not only do they lack the thick, full coats you find on huskies, malamutes, Bernese mountain dogs, and other gentle giants, but they also tend to have minimal body fat, which denies them an added layer of warmth.

To keep your pups from getting hypothermia, dress them appropriately for the weather, and don’t leave them out for an extended period of time when it’s cold. Monitor their drinking as well since proper hydration helps regulate body temperature.

2. Patellar Luxation

pet careCharacterized by a dislocated kneecap, patellar luxation inhibits mobility. While it can affect virtually all breeds, smaller dogs—females, especially—are more vulnerable to the condition. Signs of patellar luxation include limping and skipping. Thankfully, it’s not actually painful. Commonly caused by genetic malformations or trauma, the most effective treatment is surgery.

3. Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome

Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) refers to upper airway issues that affect brachycephalic breeds, which are dogs with stubby noses and flat faces. Some of the most popular small dogs—Shih Tzus, pugs, and French Bulldogs—are prone to BOAS. Symptoms include trouble breathing, vomiting, difficulty exercising, and overheating. Because of their anatomy, brachycephalic breeds have special pet care needs to keep BOAS at bay. For example, they shouldn’t be exposed to extreme temperatures or placed under excessive physical stress.
