Your car’s headlights may not get as much attention as other auto parts, but they’re actually critical safety features. Unfortunately, headlights have a tendency to dim over time, making it more difficult for other drivers to see you and increasing your risk of nighttime accidents. However, dim headlights can be a relatively easy and inexpensive fix, even if the bulb is burning out.

How to Fix a Dim Headlight

1. Check Ground Connection

A faulty or dirty ground connection limits the headlight’s power flow, potentially dimming even a brand-new bulb. Start by disassembling the connection behind the headlights and scrubbing rust and debris off of each side of the bulb’s prongs with a wire brush. When you reconnect it, apply some dielectric grease to prevent any corrosion that can cause dimming issues.

2. Polish the Lens

This is an especially common problem in humid climates, where condensation collects on the inside of the lens. Removing the plastic and carefully polishing it with a microfiber cloth can restore the brightness of your headlights without investing in more auto parts or materials.

3. Replace the Bulb

If nothing else seems to be working or you notice a grayish film on the inside of the bulb, it may need to be replaced. Your local auto parts store or salvage yard should carry the appropriate replacement bulbs. They may even offer upgrades, such as LED bulbs, that can make your lights brighter than ever.
