Having a well-designed parking lot will encourage customers to visit your business and ensure they're safe while navigating the space. However, you'll need to put some thought into creating a user-friendly layout. If you're beginning this process, use the following tips for an optimal lot.

How to Design a Parking Lot

1. Decide on Dimensions

First, measure out how much of the property you'll turn into the parking lot. Keep in mind that standard parking spaces are 9-feet by 19-feet, and you'll need ample room for turning and pedestrians.

Also, consider whether you need to add a loading zone for suppliers or shipping vehicles and if you want a special accommodation area, such as a 15-minute spot for people picking up or dropping off items.

2. Follow ADA Regulations

If your lot has up to 25 spaces, at least one needs to be handicap-accessible. Parking areas that feature up to 50 spaces should offer two accessible spaces, while those up to 100 must have four available for handicap use.

You'll need to denote which spots are for people with handicap permits by marking them with diagonal yellow lines and the international symbol of accessibility, which resembles a person in a wheelchair.

3. Assess Entry & Exit Options

Some parking lots feature one entry point, which means traffic must enter there, circle the lot, and exit at the same spot. Places with two road access points may create one for entry and one for exiting to improve the flow of traffic. Busy lots and those that serve various locations particularly benefit from having multiple entry points to ensure everyone can easily use the lot without waiting.

4. Select Angled & Straight Spaces

High-traffic lots, such as those for grocery stores or places where customers are inside for short periods, often benefit from 45-degree angle spots. These setups lower the likelihood of accidents, as the spaces are easier to get in and out of. However, keep in mind that 90-degree angle spots are more efficient in terms of spacing.
