Welding is a process that joins two or more parts together using extreme heat and/or pressure. Because it unites objects effectively across such a wide range of applications, many people turn to welders when they need something repaired. If you’re in need of metalwork and curious about how it works, here are the answers to some of the most common questions.

What to Know About Welding Repair

How does welding repair work?

Most repairs begin with the welder removing the object’s cracked material through arc gouging. This is the process of removing metal through heat that comes from a carbon arc. Afterward, the welder rejoins the material on either side of the crack.

What items can be repaired with welding?

welderThe majority of steel objects can be repaired with welding. Some of the most common jobs include excavators, conveyor belts, and sheds. From fire escapes to farm equipment, the range is practically endless.

Can wrought iron be repaired with welding?

The weldability of a wrought iron object depends on its chemical composition. All wrought iron consists of iron and stringers of slag. Weldable wrought iron features iron that has low carbon and sulfur contents, about 0.035% and 0.050% maximum respectively, and stringers that are low in volume.

Even if wrought iron meets these requirements, however, repairing it with welding is a complex process. Thus, you should only choose this option if there’s no other practical way to repair the object.

Can I do welding repair myself?

Because it’s a potentially dangerous process, only highly trained welders should attempt any kind of welding. In most cases, vocational school training and an apprenticeship are required for even the most basic skills.
