If your rig doesn't start, it could create a bothersome delay, compromise your schedule, and put your reputation at risk. Before heading in for semi-truck repairs, review some common causes for this problem and simple fixes you may be able to complete on your own.

What Should You Check if Your Rig Won't Start?

1. Bad Battery

The first step when dealing with a starter issue is to check your battery bank. Charge the bank fully and then run a load test on each battery separately. If the voltage of any of them drops after charging, this is likely your problem. Replace that battery immediately to prevent it from draining the others, and to extend the overall lifespan of your electrical storage system.

2. Loose Wires

Semi-truck repairIf the batteries pass the load test, take a few moments to inspect the wiring. If one or more of the terminal connections has loosened and become corroded, this can interfere with the battery's ability to send enough juice to the starter so it can crank the engine. If you spot loose or corroded terminal connections, scrape the corrosion off until both the terminal and the clip show bare metal. Then, tighten the connector down to prevent further oxygen/moisture intrusion.

3. Ignition Lock

An ignition lock is a handy tool that adds a layer of security to your rig and its contents. However, if you disengage it improperly or incompletely, it could frustrate you instead of a potential thief. If you use this type of security device, double-check that you've switched it off and try starting the engine again.
